The 29 year-old, who's been a consistent double-double threat throughout his nine seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers, averaged 12 points and 10.1 rebounds this past season. Thompson brings championship experience to a Celtics roster that was two wins away from an NBA Finals berth just over two months ago.
Thompson's arrival comes on the heels of the Celtics losing Gordon Hayward to the Charlotte Hornets in free agency just several hours prior.
Per NBA insider Keith Smith, the Boston will use their full midlevel exception to sign Thompson to his two-year contract.
