Free agent guard Courtney Lee, recently confirmed reports that Boston is one of the teams pursuing his services. According to Lee, Boston is one of “more than eight teams” in talks of signing the free agent. While stopping by the Orlando Summer League, Courtney got a chance to chat with head coach, Doc Rivers.
“I would say our meeting (on Saturday) went well. As far as characterizing where I’m at with the team coach and player-wiser, we’re on the same page. It’s just my agent and their front-office guys have to talk and work something out. I have a great relationship with Doc, from the first time I stepped on an NBA court,” said Lee.
Although Allen’s departure frees up cap space for Boston,
the Celtics cannot simply take the 2yr/$6 million offered to Allen and offer it to
Lee or any other free agent. Celtics were only able to do that for Allen
because of their Bird rights to Allen.
Unless Celtics can somehow pull a sign and trade deal with
Houston, the Celtics can only offer him a 2yr/$4.1 million deal with the
biannual exception. Lee would take a bit of a pay decrease if he were to accept
this contract from Boston. Last season he earned $2.3 million. Lee averaged 11.4
points and hit 40 percent of his 3-point attempts.
