The Cavaliers are seeking more compensation from the Celtics for Kyrie Irving due to concerns surrounding Isaiah Thomas' hip following his physical in Cleveland on Friday.
According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Cavaliers have delayed finalizing a deal that also includes Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and the Nets' 2018 unprotected first-round draft pick heading to Cleveland after results of Thomas' exam and may want the C's to add either Jaylen Brown or Jayson Tatum to complete a possible 5-for-1 swap.
"Cleveland is going to try to inquire about a couple of the Celtics young players -- Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, who they tried to get in the original trade -- [but] that is very unlikely," Wojnarowski said on Sunday night. "But Boston still has a war chest of future first-round picks of their own and some picks they control from other teams and Cleveland is going to try to get one more of those to finalize this deal." [ESPN]Cavaliers GM Koby Altman will certainly inquire about the Celtics pair of No. 3 picks from the last two NBA drafts in Brown (2016) and Tatum (2017), but it doesn't mean Danny Ainge has to oblige or entertain the notion that he has to add either player as a final piece to give into Cleveland's demands.
Despite including the Nets 2018 pick in this trade, here's what the Celtics have for first-round selections the next three years:
2018 - Their own, the Lakers' pick (if it falls between No. 2 and No. 5)
2019 - Their own, the Grizzlies' pick (Top-8 protected), Clippers' pick (Top-14 protected) and the 76ers/Kings pick (Top-1 protected) if the Lakers pick does not convert in 2018.
2020 - Their own, Clippers' and Grizzlies' pick (if not conveyed in 2019)
"Boston is resisting and will initially at least, resist this idea," Wojnarowski explained. "Boston believes that it was completely transparent with Cleveland about where Thomas was physically and his rehab. Cleveland's version of this is that they didn't realize how long Thomas could potentially be out this season." The Celtics and Cavaliers have three days to work on this trade or mutually agree to extend the deadline.
