Derrick White named to NBA All-Defensive Second Team

Derrick White was named to the NBA's All-Defensive Second Team, the league announced Tuesday afternoon.

The Celtics guard earned the most total points (99) among all Second-Team players. Only the Bucks Jrue Holiday (192 points) and the Bulls Alex Caruso (125 points) finished ahead of White among NBA guards.

White, who appeared in all 82 games for the Celtics this year, including 70 starts, averaged 12.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game in his first full season in Boston. His contributions also played into the C's 110.6 defensive rating -- which ranked second-best in the NBA.

This makes it the first All-Defensive Team selection for White, who was acquired by Boston in February 2022 during a trade deadline swap with the San Antonio Spurs.

White nearly had some familiar company, as teammate Marcus Smart -- who took home Defensive Player of the Year honors last season and is the current reigning NBA Hustle Award winner, but came up short with 35 total points in All-Defensive voting -- the highest total among players who did not make one of the two teams and fifth among guards.

Jaylen Brown also earned some recognition with one first-team vote and two second-team votes, totaling four points, while Robert Williams, who earned a All-Defensive second-team selection last year, was not voted in again after being limited to 35 games and just 23.5 minutes per contest in 2022-23 due to injury.

With being named to an All-Defensive Team, White will also earn a $250,000 bonus for his efforts this season.
