Celtics assistant Charles Lee among finalists for Hornets head coach job

Celtics assistant coach Charles Lee has reportedly emerged as a finalist for the Charlotte Hornets head coach vacancy along with ESPN analyst JJ Redick.

Lee joined Joe Mazzulla's staff as lead assistant last offseason after spending the previous five years with the Milwaukee Bucks -- where he won a championship in 2021 -- and the Atlanta Hawks before that, both under Mike Budenholzer.

Prior to Lee's arrival in Boston, he interviewed for head coaching jobs with the Bucks, Detroit Pistons, Phoenix Suns and Toronto Raptors last summer.

This would be the second straight season that Mazzulla would lose his lead assistant coach, if Lee were to be hired by the Hornets -- who are a young team rebuilding with LaMelo Ball, Grant Williams and Brandon Miller as key pieces to add to. Last year, lead assistant Damon Stoudamire departed the Celtics for a head coaching gig at Georgia Tech.

While Stoudamire had to immediately take the job prior to the playoffs beginning last spring, it's unlikely that Lee would have to leave right away, as he'll probably remain with the Celtics throughout the length of their postseason run that may result in a second championship for the top assistant.

In the meantime, Boston has a 2-1 series lead over the Miami Heat with Game 4 set to tip-off tonight at 7:30 pm ET on TNT.
