Sullinger Injury a Huge Concern

After the uplifting news of the Celtics acquiring Isaiah Thomas at the trade deadline was announced, news broke of a potential heartbreaking loss for the Celtics playoff hopes. Jared Sullinger is out indefinitely with a stress reaction in his left foot.

The injury apparently happened in the Celtics biggest win of the year and last game before the All-Star Break, against the Atlanta Hawks. Coach Brad Stevens weighed in on the injury yesterday at Celtics practice in Sacramento yesterday, and made it clear this was not good news.

"Jared is going to be out a while," said Stevens. "He's not going to play on this trip, and I don't anticipate him playing any time soon." [ESPN Boston]

This is just awful news for the Celtics playoff hopes. Sullinger is the best player on this team, no question about it. The team as a whole has played well but missing Sullinger's talent on the offensive end, and his rebounding will be a huge loss.

The hope is that he is not out for the entire season, an early report suggest that he will not need any type of surgery. He left practice yesterday in a walking boot so it remains to be seen how major of an injury this will be. Sully seemed to think the team is going to be ok without him though.

"The type of team we have and the type of attitudes we have as a team, especially with the guys that are here, they understand what we need to do, how we need to play, and the grit and the grind that we need to win basketball games," Sullinger said. [ESPN Boston]

There is some good news as Kelly Olynyk should be returning back to the team if not tonight as the Celtics take on the Sacramento Kings or some time during this road trip. Also the C's just acquired Jonas Jerekbo on Thursday, and could fill in minutes at the power forward spot and at least provide a rebounding presence.
