The Celtics are reportedly signing center Charles Bassey to a second 10-day, according to Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe.
Bassey has played in two games for the Celtics so far this season, which included the team's win over the Golden State Warriors and the loss against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The 6-foot-10 big-man suited up for two other teams this season, playing a couple games with the Grizzlies and one game with the 76ers. Bassey, a 2021 second-round pick, also had a three-year stint with the Spurs to start his professional career.
Bassey was on the Celtics' summer league roster this past July and has averaged 20.3 points and 10.9 rebounds in 46 career G-League games. He also spent time with the Santa Cruz Warriors and Delaware Blue Coats last season.
According to NBA insider Keith Smith, the Celtics had a decision to make Wednesday as Bassey's original 10-day contract expired and the team had to decide on either a second 10-day or sign the center for the rest of the season to reach the roster minimum of 14 players signed on standard NBA deals.
With Nikola Vučević still out with a fractured right ring finger, Bassey will boost the Celtics' frontcourt depth for the short-term as Neemias Queta holds it down as the starting center and Luka Garza continues to take advantage of his current back-up role, while Amari Williams is also an option at that spot -- as he has split time between Boston and Maine this season. The rookie has played 18 games for the Celtics and 19 with the G-League affiliated Maine Celtics so far.
In the meantime, Bassey's new deal will run through the first week of April, as the the regular season finale for the Celtics will be on April 12 when they host the Orlando Magic at TD Garden.
