Celtics assign James Young to D-League

Celtics rookie James Young was assigned to the Maine Red Claws yesterday afternoon and joined the D-League affiliated squad just before they played against the Grand Rapids Drive.

Young posted 20 points and 5 rebounds last night in his first game with Maine since late January. He's averaging 23.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game this season as a member of the Red Claws.

Young rejoined the Celtics in February, and was inserted into coach Stevens' player rotation. But after a number of games in which he shot poorly and struggled defensively, he was replaced by newcomer Gigi Datome. Datome has not only shown he can produce offensively but has also done a good job on defense for the Celtics.

This move will certainly help with Young's confidence. Coach Stevens made a good decision in bringing Datome into their rotation, leaving not enough playing time for Young. Even though Isaiah Thomas is still nursing his back injury, Phil Pressey has stepped in nicely and is doing a good job as a back up point guard.

The Red Claws play again tomorrow night against the Grand Rapids Drive, and then Saturday at Texas.
